INTRODUCTION TO ESTHETICS: COURSE GUIDE
SCIENCES, LECTURES, PRACTICAL COURSEWORK AND CLINICAL PRACTICE
- Anatomy and Physiology – This class provides the first overview about cells, tissues, bones and muscles of the face. The class explores each system of the body and how the skin affects or is affected by each system.
- Physiology and Histology of the Skin – This class presents the initial introduction to the intricate layers of the skin, the functions of each layer and the role skin plays in the protection of the body.
- Bacteriology and Sanitation – Students will learn the common types of bacteria, how they multiply and transmit, and how to prohibit the spread of germs and/or disease in their work environment.
- Skin Disorders and Disease – This important class utilizes visuals aids to familiarize the student with the various skin disorders they will encounter as an esthetician. Also included are the various grades of acne, several types of skin cancers and numerous lesions and diseases.
- Esthetics Chemistry – Students will learn a basic knowledge of the science of chemistry and how it relates to the skin.
- Product Knowledge – In order to be successful, an esthetician must have an in-depth working knowledge of the product line they will be using in their services and retail products for home care. This class presents the details of each professional product used in the school.
- Cosmetic Chemistry – This core class integrates the information learned in esthetic chemistry as it pertains to the esthetician. The focus will be on functional and performance ingredients, product penetration and effect.
- Electricity and Esthetic Equipment – The fundamentals of electricity are discussed in this class with an introduction to esthetic electrotherapy.
- Nutrition – Nutrition plays a huge role in the health of the skin. This class explores the basics of nutrition and how it relates to the skin-health puzzle.
- Enemies of the Skin/Aging Skin – This lesson discusses the most damaging substances to the skin and their effects, along with prevention and potential healing measures. Topics include sun exposure, smoking, stress and pollution.
- Skin Analysis and Consultation – As with any service, consultation is the first line of communication with a client. Students will learn how to conduct a detailed client consultation which includes performing correct skin analysis, skin typing, determining skin conditions and recognizing skin disorders, diseases, Glogau and Fitzpatrick scales.
- Aromatherapy – A favorite among students, this class delves into the multifaceted world of aromatherapy. Loaded with information, this class touches on the history, chemistry, uses and effects of essential oils. Students will also experience blending oils for their own use.
- Holistic Facials – Another crowd pleaser, this class allows students to create their own concoctions of cleansers, exfoliants, moisturizers and masques, using all-natural ingredients found in their refrigerators, pantries, grocery and health food stores.
- Client Consultation and Documentation – This hands-on class teaches students the proper way to greet, prepare and analyze their client. Emphasis is placed on the importance of thorough documentation, using analysis, throughout a treatment or service.
- Ethics of Touch – Not to be taken lightly, professional ethics begin on day one of classes and continue throughout the entire program. Guest Instructor, Jan Luzzi, LMT, a faculty member of Stillpoint School of Massage (at Greenfield Community College) since 1996, teaches a popular class that delves into the unique perspective of the ethics of touch, which centers on boundaries, a comfortable and safe environment and client and practitioner relations.
- Retail and Client Education – Retailing in a salon or spa setting revolves around educating clients to better skin care alternatives. This includes professional services combined with proper home care. In this class, students will learn the skills and knowledge to build upon in order to better serve their clients. Emphasis is on product knowledge and communication skills.
- Interview and Resumes – This class gives an informative and highly useful lesson on building a professional resume including tips on job searching and how to conduct a successful interview.
- Facial Procedures – This component includes cleansing and toning, professional exfoliation, facial massage techniques, manual extraction, ampoules and finishing masques.
- High Frequency and Galvanic Modalities – Students will learn about the distinct properties and uses of electrical therapy during a skin treatment.
- Wax Depilation Techniques – Students will be taught the importance of developing proficiency using hard and strip waxes for hair removal on the face and the body.
- Paraffin Treatments – A true spa treatment, students enjoy this lesson using paraffin to facilitate penetration of products and to warm and relax muscles in the face, hands and feet.
- Specialty Masques – Moving further into the specialty classes, students will learn at least two popular specialty masques that increase benefits for both the client and the esthetician.
- Back Facials – Another favorite among students and clients alike, this class focuses on a skin treatment that is designed for the back, incorporating many of the same procedures used for a facial treatment.
- Eye Treatments – These specialty treatments target the unique conditions of the skin surrounding the delicate eye area.
Introduction Program-Makeup 1
- Sanitation – Before students pick up a makeup brush, they will learn about practicing the highest standards of sanitation for safeguarding their client and maintaining a proper and clean work environment.
- Color Theory – This class establishes the essential groundwork for the trained makeup artist.
- Client Analysis – Students will learn how to thoroughly analyze their client for optimal makeup choice and application.
- Tools of the Trade – As a professional, you will learn about the many varieties of makeup brushes, tools and their care and proper use.
- Face Shape Analysis – This class teaches how to determine a client’s face shape for customizing their makeup service.
- Foundation, Concealer and Blush: Theory – In this lesson, students will learn the science behind the function of these subjects as well as color selection and proper application.
- Makeup Applications: Eyes – Students will learn ten makeup applications specific to different eye shapes.
- Lip Correction and Application – This lesson addresses the imperfection of lip shape and how to achieve a more balanced lip line along with proper technique for color application.
- Advanced Contouring and Highlighting – This class focuses on the theory and application of how to maximize or minimize a client’s features using these two techniques.
- Makeup Applications – The emphasis of this class is day, evening and wedding makeup, dramatic, formal and special occasion makeup applications.
- False Eyelashes – Students will learn the skills needed for false eyelash application using strip and individual lashes.
- Developing a Portfolio – In this segment, students will learn about the tools and criteria necessary for a professional makeup artist’s working portfolio.
